In March 2026, TTYM Global (Talk To Your Midwife) successfully carried out a Rhesus Disease Awareness Outreach in Nkurakan Community Health Center, located in the Eastern Region of Ghana.
The outreach aimed to educate women, particularly pregnant women on the importance of knowing their blood group and Rhesus factor to prevent complications such as Rhesus Disease, a potentially life-threatening condition affecting pregnancies and newborns.
CAMPAIGN ACTIVITIES
The outreach was designed to be interactive, practical, and community-centered:
- Community Education Session:
Women were engaged through simplified health education sessions on Rhesus factor, blood group compatibility, and the implications for pregnancy outcomes. - Interactive Discussions:
Participants were given the opportunity to ask questions, share experiences, and receive clarity on misconceptions surrounding pregnancy and blood compatibility. - Distribution of IEC Materials:
Educational materials provided by the Worldwide Initiative for Rhesus Disease Eradication (WIRhE) were used to reinforce learning and ensure participants could continue sharing knowledge within their communities. - Emergency Maternity Kit Distribution:
As part of TTYM Global’s integrated approach, emergency maternity kits were distributed to support safer delivery practices and improve preparedness among expectant mothers.
IMPACT
The outreach successfully reached over 50 women, each representing an opportunity to improve maternal and newborn health outcomes through knowledge and preparedness.
Participants demonstrated increased understanding of:
- The importance of knowing their blood group and Rhesus status
- The risks associated with Rhesus incompatibility
- The need for early and consistent antenatal care
