In Nigeria, we collaborate with the Rhesus Solution Initiative to raise awareness about Rh disease and maternal health. Through community outreach, workshops, and resource sharing, we equip women, families, and local healthcare providers with practical information to prevent and manage Rh-related health issues.

Our approach emphasises cultural relevance and accessibility, ensuring that messages are understood by all community members, including those with limited literacy. By combining local expertise with WIRhE resources, we aim to create lasting impact in communities, helping women make informed health decisions and improving maternal and child health outcomes.

On December 9th, our partners carried out the following outreach: HEALTH AWARENESS OUTREACH ON RHESUS FACTOR AND BLOOD GROUP TESTING – “MISERY TO MIRACLE: THE STORY OF RHESUS FACTOR”. The outreach was attended by 220 women and girls.

The outreach focused on educating teenagers and women of child bearing age about the importance of being aware of Rhesus factor and its associated complications and went further to conduct free blood group test to assist those who are not aware of their Rhesus factor.

Prior to this time, there had been a high level of ignorance on people’s knowledge of their Rhesus status and poor maternal health in Nigeria.

OBJECTIVES OF THE OUTREACH

The outreach was designed to:

  1. Raise awareness on blood group and Rhesus factor.
  2. Educate participants on the impact of Rhesus incompatibility on pregnancy.
  3. Provide strategies for reducing neonatal mortality through early detection and preventive care.
  4. Encourage young adults (especially students) to understand their health status early.
  5. Promote informed decision-making among women regarding antenatal services.
  6. Free blood group testing

ACTIVITIES CONDUCTED

The outreach included the following activities:

  1. Health lectures on blood group compatibility and neonatal health.
  2. Demonstrations on how blood group testing is performed.
  3. Awareness sessions on neonatal care and Rhesus factor implications.
  4. Distribution of educational materials (flyers and some wristbands).
  5. Interactive Q&A sessions where participants asked questions and received expert guidance.
  6. Filling of survey questionnaire

Impact

The health talk achieved significant positive impact, including:

  1. Increased awareness among women about the importance of knowing their blood group and Rhesus factor before or early in pregnancy.
  2. Improved understanding of how to prevent neonatal complications through timely antenatal care.
  3. participants gained foundational knowledge on blood group science, promoting long-term health-conscious behavior.
  4. The outreach strengthened community trust in health education initiatives.
  5. Overall, women were well informed, and many expressed willingness to undergo testing and seek proper antenatal guidance.

The outreach successfully fulfilled its objectives by equipping women and students with life-saving knowledge about blood group testing and neonatal health. By enhancing awareness and promoting preventive practices, Rhesus Solution Initiative and WIRHE have contributed meaningfully to reducing neonatal death risks within the community.Continuous efforts of this nature will further strengthen community health and support safer motherhood and healthier new-borns.
